Power Raking Calgary and Edmonton
Power Raking is a crucial process for maintaining a lush and vibrant lawn by removing dead grass and excess thatch. At Yardworx, we recommend power raking once a year in the spring, before new growth begins, to promote a thicker and healthier lawn. In Calgary and Edmonton, the optimal time for power raking is between April 1 and May 15.
It’s important to note that we don’t remove the entire thatch layer, as a light layer of thatch contributes to a healthy lawn. Removing too much thatch or performing a deep power raking can potentially damage the root system. Our skilled professionals understand the balance required and will ensure the appropriate depth based on the specific circumstances.
By choosing Yardworx for your power raking needs, you can trust our experienced team to deliver exceptional results. We tailor our services to the unique requirements of each customer, and for repeat clients, we adjust the depth of power raking accordingly.

What is Thatch?
“Thatch” is the accumulation of dead and decomposing grass plants. Thatch is similar to many aspects of turf production – you can get too much of a good thing. Small amounts of thatch, in the range of 1/4 to 1/2 inch, can improve wear tolerance and surface resiliency, and reduce water loss and soil temperature fluctuations.
Thicker layers, particularly beyond an inch, often cause serious problems. Excessive thatch reduces the effectiveness of fertilizers, watering and pest controls and provides a good habitat for disease and insects.
Power raking should only be done in mid-spring (by late May) since damage is done to the lawn and there needs to be recovery time before there are extreme summer weather conditions.
Please Note:
Our Power Raking Process
Step 1
Thorough Power Raking: Our experienced crew will meticulously power rake the entire lawn area, using a back-and-forth pattern similar to mowing the lawn. This process effectively brings the excess thatch, which is the layer of dead grass and debris, to the surface. By removing this layer, we create a healthier environment for your lawn to thrive.
Step 2
Removal of Dead Grass: Once the power raking is complete, our dedicated team will meticulously hand rake or use blowers to gather and remove all the dead grass and debris from the surface. This step ensures a clean and debris-free lawn, promoting optimal growth and appearance.
Step 3
Sidewalk Debris Cleanup: In addition to tending to your lawn, our diligent crew will go the extra mile to leave your property looking pristine. They will meticulously blow off all the debris from the sidewalks, ensuring a tidy and well-maintained outdoor space.
With our comprehensive power raking process, including thorough removal of thatch and debris, you can expect a healthier, cleaner, and more attractive lawn that will make your property stand out.
