Irrigation Blow Out and Startup

irrigation blow out CalgaryIf you’ve invested in an automatic irrigation system for your yard or business premises in Calgary, well done!

It’s a great idea to make sure that your lawn, plants, flowers, and shrubs receive the consistent watering they require regardless of our notoriously difficult climate.

However, to protect your investment and avoid problems when you switch it back on each year after winter, there are a couple of important maintenance steps that are needed.

The team at Yardworx can help you:

  • Install a new irrigation system
  • Keep it working at peak condition throughout the spring and summer,
  • Prepare it for “hibernation” during the winter months.

Why is irrigation important?

irrigation start up in calgaryWhen you’re busy, it can be difficult to remember to give your lawn, flowers, plants, trees and shrubs adequate water in order to promote healthy growth.

Overwatering of lawns can also be a problem.

An automatic irrigation system is an underground network of pipes installed in areas of your lawn to provide an optimal amount of water.

Most lawn systems in Calgary use surface spray irrigation, where sprinkler heads and rotors are used on the lawn. Drip irrigation systems may also be employed in flower beds for plants.

Lawns love consistency but our climate here in Calgary does not always provide it. We can get long droughts in spring or summer, during which time your lawn will suffer damage without adequate water.

With an irrigation system, you can set a timer for your sprinklers to water the lawn at the same time on specific days: perfect for healthy lawn growth!

However, once installed, your irrigation system is not simply a “set and forget” feature of your yard.

As recommended by the City of Calgary, an irrigation system must be started up in the spring and checked for repair requirements. Then, in the fall, it needs to be shut down with the water turned off and blown out to ensure that it does not freeze within the system.

Irrigation Start Up

During the early spring, after months of being dormant, problems often occur with sprinkler systems when they are turned on again.

Once the irrigation system is turned on, all sprinkler heads and lines are inspected for damages. Sprinkler heads will be adjusted to provide adequate watering for your lawn, and, if any damage is identified, you will be notified and it will be repaired.

If the damage is extensive, you will be provided with a quote for repairs that will need to be approved before the repairs are performed.

A professional irrigation startup and inspection of your underground irrigation system in spring will set your mind at rest for the months ahead when your yard should be flourishing.

We provide an exclusive seven-checkpoint process that covers every base with your irrigation system:

Irrigation blow out/winterization

For irrigation winterization, you need to turn off the water and drain the sprinkler system to avoid water freezing in the system during our icy winters here in Calgary.

As you might expect, residual water is bad news in a sprinkler system as it freezes and expands in the winter and can cause problems for the lines, valves, and manifold that may lead to extensive damage and costly repairs.

Blowing out irrigation lines by the professionals at Yardworx saves you the stress of wondering what might happen each spring when you turn your system back on again.

With our irrigation blow out service, you receive the care and maintenance your sprinkler system needs if you want to save costly repairs.

We will visit your property in the fall before the freezing temperatures arrive, and our crews will professionally blow out all of your irrigation lines and guarantee that they are flushed free of water for the winter.

Frequently Asked Questions

The short answer to this is: when you’re sure that hard ground freezes are over for the winter and the ground is fully thawed. Turning your system on and the ground refreezing is a risk. We keep a close eye on the weather conditions at Yardworx so we can help you get the timing right. It’s usually in late April or early May.
Starting your sprinkler system is not simply a case of turning the control panel on. It could take up to two hours to complete the necessary checks, depending on the size of your yard. It’s generally best to get one of our professional irrigation specialists to start your sprinkler system after winter so that we can check it thoroughly for damage of sprinkler heads, valves, all irrigation zones, and so on. Only attempt it yourself if you are experienced in the mechanics of irrigation systems.
The winterization process needs to be done before the temperatures plummet and the ground starts freezing. We keep a close eye on the weather conditions at Yardworx so we can help you get the timing right. It’s usually between September and November but it can be requested as early as the end of August.
Once your irrigation system has been flushed free of water, we need to shut off the main irrigation line and open the drain valve inside your home, if applicable. Our crew will make sure that your system is correctly shut down in the winter so that, come spring, it’s ready to go again.
Yes, irrigation systems can leak if they are not installed correctly or turned off correctly in the winter – and this can add plenty of dollars to your monthly water bill. They can also be damaged during construction projects or due to weather variations (regular freezing and thawing).
